Mission 1376 - Roma to Archerfield

Background

On Monday the 30th of October 2006 I flew Mission 1376, making it my 47th Angel Flight.

The mission description from Angel Flight was:

SUBSEQUENT TRIP REQUEST: (9th and 10th Angel flights)

A 5 year old resident of Roma requires treatment for ?Hurler Scheie Syndrome?(Inherited enzyme deficiency) at the Royal Children?s Hospital.

Due to the distances involved and the frequency of treatment, air transport would greatly reduce the travelling time and amount of discomfort experienced by the patient and also help alleviate the financial burden on the family.

I had carried Chloe on her maiden voyage, Mission 1178, in August and again in September on Mission 1269.

Leg 1: Archerfield to Roma: Rise with the sparrows

As before, the appointment at the hospital was for 11:00, necessitating a 8:30 departure out of Roma. Since we have to brief the passengers, load the luggage etc. I had to arrive at Roma no later than 8:15. Since it takes about an hour and a half to fly there, I had to get airborne no later than 6:30, which in turn meant rising at 5:30, drive out to the airfield in the dark and do a daily inspection by torchlight.

I got airborne just at 6:30 and quickly climbed above the strato cumulus and stayed there until Roma.

I taxied up to the terminal building at 8:10. Chloe and her mum Jo were already waiting for me. I loaded what little luggage they had aboard and had them seated in no time.

Leg 2: Roma to Archerfield

We got airborne at 8:33 and quickly climbed to our crusing altitude of 10,000', where we again sat on top of a solid layer of cloud. After an hour and a half of spectacularly un-eventful flying we descended toward Archerfield, and once clear of the clouds were re-cleared to track via the visual reporting point of Goodna.

Touch down on runway 04R was just before 10:00 and I taxied up to my mechanic's hangar (as the plane was scheduled for some maintenance), where Sue Stubbs was already waiting for us.

Also in attendance was Angel Dog Puppy, who was keen to greet everyone with a paw and a lick.

I was in the office well before 11:00, having already been halfway across the state and back, and saved a little girl and her mum a six hour drive.

Summary

We were back on the ground in Archerfield after having
