Mission 2805 - Toowoomba to Bundaberg

Background

On Monday the 7th of April 2008 I flew Mission 2805, making it my 90th Angel Flight.

The mission description from Angel Flight was:

SUBSEQUENT TRIP REQUEST: (18th Angel Flight)

A 37 year old lady from Gin Gin has been diagnosed with Breast Cancer. She is required to travel to Toowoomba every 3 weeks to undergo Chemotherapy.

I had flown Jacqueline and Dave a few weeks earlier on Mission 2747. A day before this trip Dave called me and asked whether we would have enough room to also carry their nine year old son, Trevor, who was on school holidays. As I have enough space and we would be below maximum take off weight, I readily agreed.

Archerfield to Toowoomba

It was blustery and changeable when I turned up at the airfield to wake up FWL and put some fuel into her tanks, but the general forecast was good.

Having completeted my run-up checks and reported ready for departure, the tower advised that due to approaching rain showers I might circle to the left instead of right after getting airborne off runway 10L. I followed their advice and headed west.

Half an hour later I was circling Toowoomba airfield and touched down on runway left, again with a stiff breeze blowing from the east.

Toowoomba to Bundaberg

Hannah Blair, on her maiden mission with Angel Flight, already had her charges waiting for me. So we were able to get going some 15 minutes early.

We soon had Trevor and Jacqueline installed in the back seats, with Dave drawing the short straw of joining me in the front.

Trevor soon fell asleep while Dave and I chatted in the front (Jacqueline having opted not to wear headsets). Dave yet again proved to be a better navigator than I, figuring out what the townships were even before I was able to identify them from the map.

We spent most of the time flying slight S bends to avoid the bigger cumulus clouds that littered the air at our cruising altitude of 9,000 and extended higher.

But the winds were pushing us along, so no-one was complaining. About an hour and fifteen minutes later I somehow managed to locate the airfield, and lined myself up with runway 14. With the usual thump announcing our arrival we knew that the flight was complete.

Bundaberg to Archerfield

Having no luggage to unload, I soon had Trevor, Jacqueline and Dave landside and started up again.

The flight home was marked with similar weather as the first two legs, but I became visual below the clouds some 50 nm north of Brisbane. From here I descended toward Archerfield, where I touched down just after 4:30.
