Mission 3329 - Miles to Archerfield

Background

On Thursday the 11th of September 2008 I flew Mission 3329, making it my 101st Angel Flight.

The mission description from Angel Flight was:

SUBSEQUENT TRIP REQUEST: (3rd and 4th Angel Flights):

A Fifty-Four year old man needs to travel to Brisbane every month for ongoing chemotherapy, remedial care and pain management. He has cancer of the hips.

The travel expenses and continuing treatment have left the family in financial stress.

Leg 1 - Archerfield to Miles

The flight out to Miles at 10,000' was in mostly good conditions.

I arrived a little early but had to spend a few minutes on the ground trying to raise Flight Watch on the short wave (HF) radio. All the while the local ambulance that had transported Brian to the airfield was waiting with the air conditioning going.

When I eventually shut down, the ambulance pulled up right by the plane and Brian only had to walk a few yards.

Leg 2 - Miles to Archerfield

Having settled Brian in the right hand seat we soon got airborne and climbed to 9,000'. But, alas, the cloud tops were reaching us there, making for a slightly bumpy flight. So I requested 10,000' instead. Here it was smoother with only the occasional top reaching us and we had smooth sailing for most of the way.

By the time we approached Amberley we were well and truly clear of clouds and continued visually toward Archerfield. The grass strip was in use today and we were lined up on runway left when at 300' we got the offer to change to runway right. This means about 5 minutes less taxi time so I accepted and we were soon parked at my normal parking spot across from the terminal building.

I expected to have to usher Brian through the security gate so that he could meet up with Earth Angels Richard and Beverly Taylor, but this was not necessary. Our esteemed leader Bill Bristow was at hand again and led them out as I arrived.

Bill was here on real business today, his company, bcm advertising, was shooting a commercial for television at the terminal and using the prop of his magnificent aeroplane as, well, a prop.

Summary

I was back on the ground in Archerfield after having
