Mission 4900 - Archerfield to Grafton

Background

On Friday the 12th of February 2010 I flew Mission 4900, making it my 130th Angel Flight.

The mission descriptions from Angel Flight was:

SUBSEQUENT TRIP REQUEST:

A nine year old girl from Blaxlands Creek (near Grafton) has kidney failure and is on home automated peritoneal dialysis.

Due to the stress of the dialysis her cardiac condition is worsening and she now requires Haemodialysis three times a week at the Royal Childrens Hospital in Brisbane

I had flown Rebecca and her Mum before on Mission 4761, Mission 4770 and Mission 4792 This time, I again would only be taking them home, another Angel Flight pilot earlier in the day.

I had just off loaded the passengers from the previous flight and was refueling the plane in preparation for this flight when Kylie from Angel Flight called to advise me of a delay. The incoming pilot was only informed of works on Grafton air field after he had commenced his descent. Not being able to land there he initially diverted to Lismore and, having landed, got onto the phone to our passengers to discuss contigencies. It was decided for them to drive north to South Grafton, where he would pick them up a little later.

Because of all of this Rebecca had arrived about an hour late and consequently, with the dialysis still taking as long as it has to take, the departure back home would be pushed back as well. And, since they had left their car at South Grafton, could I fly to South Grafton instead of Grafton? Seeing that the weather was forecast to be fine enough South Grafton was agreeable.

I turned up a little earlier than necessary, wandered out the aircraft to open the window and doors and checked the fuel. While I was there a chap came over from his beautiful Piper Malibu and itroduced himself as Terry Donohue. He too was an Angel Flight pilot, and, would be doing a double meission, taking, it turned out, the passengers from my morning's run back home as well another two passengers to Hervey Bay.

So we chatted and compared notes as we waited for our passengers to arrive. Caleb and Kim arrived first and seemed a little confused (or was it scared?) to see me again. Regardless, I helped Terry load his passengers aboard. Soon enough Rebecca and her gran Carol turned up.

I had them quickly loaded in the back and we taxied together with the Malibu for runway 10. Terry took off just before me, turning left for Gladstone, while I turned right for South Grafton. About an hour later I was circling the beautiful little strip of South Grafton where we alighted without further ado.

Carol and Rebecca headed for their car as I tried to find someone to pay the landing fees (all of $6) I found a chap who was only too happy to take the money, and judging by the noise of clinking glasses emanating from the local club rooms, I am sure that money was soon wisely invested.

I departed north and cruised through the nice weather, about an hour later, after the tower had shut down for the night, I turned final to alight on runway 10L at Archerfield and put the plane to bed.
