Mission 6730 - Archerfield to Blackall

Background

On Tuesday the 9th of August 2011 I flew Mission 6730, making it my 164th Angel Flight.

The mission descriptions from Angel Flight were:

SUBSEQUENT TRIP REQUEST:

This gentleman lives in a remote rural community and is required to be in Brisbane for an urgent oncology consult and subsequent treatment.

The round trip would take a week without the assistance of Angel flight. Due to his condition he is unable to drive to Brisbane and the logistics and cost of public transport are staggering.

Archerfield to Blackall via Roma

Just like I did on my previous flight to Blackall, the weather forecast called for head winds, very strong (about 40 odd knots) which flying directly to Blackall impossible. Hence we would have to refuel in Roma on the way there.

Gary and Hazel, being used to travelling with me by now, settled into the back seats as we headed out into the wide blue yonder for Roma. We quickly climbed to altitude and started creeping across the landscape - not as fast as usual, but faster than the forecast winds would us have believe.

Unlike my last attempted trip to Roma the aerodrome was in severly clear conditions so we did the customary circle over the windsock, which was all over the place today, before alighting in a strong crosswind on runway 18.

As I pumped the fuel aboard Graham McKnight, one or my earliest Angel Flight passengers who lives in Roma came ambling over and we had a nice chat.

With everyone having made use of the facilities, it was time to head back west. With the wind being very firmly from the west at 20 odd knots, we departed off the dirt strip, more or less, directly toward Blackall.

Blackall to Archerfield

With the wind firmly behind me this time, I did not need to refuel in Roma, but proceeded straight back to Archerfield, where I landed some 3 odd hours later.

During these flights, we
