Mission 6902 - Baralaba to Archerfield

Background

On Tuesday the 27th of September 2011 I flew Mission 6902, making it my 166th Angel Flight.

The mission description from Angel Flight was:

INITIAL TRIP REQUEST:

A lady from Baralaba was recently diagnosed with Lymphoma and will need to travel to Brisbane every three weeks for chemotherapy.

With two young sons to care for, an Angel Flight plus the friendly face of an Earth Angel would be a welcome alternative to the long drive.

Archerfield to Baralaba

With the flight time being flexible for this mission, I got airborne at a leisurely 10am. There was a littble bit of cumulus around initially, I soon climbed to 10,000' where I settled in just above the inversion layer for a nice and smooth flight north.

The cloud layer gradually increase below me, but I became clear of it at about 4,000' on descent to discover a surpsisingly neat airstrip awaiting some heavy impact from my undercarriage.

As I circled overhead I was a little startled to see a 4WD going full tilt up and then down the airstrip. I landed on the opposite end from where the 4WD had finally stopped and taxied towards it. Vicki amd her husband Michael were inside the car, which the local ambulance driver had driven up and down the strip to "scare the wild-life off". I replied that I did not consider myself to be wild life.

This being Vicki's and Michael's first flight in a light plane, I made extra sure of the safety briefing and had them soon strapped in the back.

Once we had climbed over the top of the clouds, the flight home was just as smooth as it had been on the way up. I again got clear of the clouds on descent through about 4,000', allowing us to proceed visually toward Archerfield.

Earth Angel John Blewett was already waiting in the terminal to take Vicki and Michael on the dangerous part of the journey - the drive to their lodgings across town.
